E-Moderating for health care educators, 18th October - 12th November 2010 - CANCELLED

Joint MEDEV/ATIMOD on-line course

Gilly Salmon's popular e-moderating course is offered to health care educators in order to facilitate a better understanding of the potential for e-Moderating in a clinical teaching environment.

It offers the opportunity to quickly come up to speed in this vital area of practice and all the ideas can be applied right away to your own modules, courses and programmes. Health care education is often based in clinical teaching sites and students use technology as a mainstream part of their educational support. Thus it is even more important to maximise the effectiveness of on-line strategies in this context. The course is a version of Gilly Salmon's popular e-moderating course adapted to the specific needs of health care educators in order to facilitate a better understanding of the potential for e-Moderating in a clinical teaching environment.

There is a growing demand for the provision of flexibly accessed learning but few lecturers have themselves learnt this way. E-moderating is therefore not a set of skills most lecturers have acquired vicariously whilst they themselves were learning. A common view is that learning online is to do with the provision of subject resources requiring high levels of computing skills, but this is a very limited conception of online learning. This course takes a much wider view and is centred on discussion and the use of dialogue to express ideas and opinions and give and receive feedback amongst peers. Learning is achieved through group interaction using online discussion boards.

Those completing the course will receive a Certificate of Participation and Completion and will develop skills and knowledge in the following:

  • E-moderating.
  • Becoming a competent online learner.
  • Participating in an online learning community.
  • Use of computer mediated conferencing as a key teaching and learning resource.
  • Developing pedagogical knowledge using computer mediated conferencing.
  • Developing a personal plan to continue to increase e-moderating skills.
  • Engaging in online reflection with others.

Participants will be able to take part in the e-tivities designed to promote understanding of the role of e-moderating, offering a chance to engage with peers who also work with clinical students.

The courses are fully web-based (browser) with a maximum of 18 people per course and approximately 25 hours overall (spread evenly over the 4 weeks). The course is based on educators working online together, and encourages you to reflect on your ideas about e-moderating and those of others as you go about your usual every day work or in downtime- travelling or in the bath! You will also need good access to the Internet, preferably from both office and home, and a flexible and open approach to exploring e-learning. You will not need a high level of technical skill to get started. If you can log on to web sites you can access the course!

There is a charge of £325 for these courses (they are not VAT rated) and places are strictly limited to 18 delegates on a first-come basis and we will operate a waiting list.

For further information and to book a place please go to the MEDEV subject centre website - http://www.medev.ac.uk/show_workshop_page_public?entry_id=182
