Managing Impairment in Practice Placements: A Multidisciplinary Seminar

Disability legislation states that all public bodies within the UK now have a legal responsibility to ensure that the needs of disabled people are anticipated and met to provide equality of access and opportunity with non-disabled people. Thus universities when recruiting, teaching and assessing disabled people and NHS establishments offering practice placements and subsequent employment need to eliminate discrimination from their policies. This legislation has subsequently raised awareness in both academic and NHS departments; challenging us to reconsider our approach to people who have an ambition to work in Health and Social Care and to reflect on assumptions about disabled people, their ability to care and the barriers they face. The Yorkshire and Humber NHS has funded a one year project managed by the Universities of Huddersfield and Bradford to investigate disability and fitness to practise for students accessing NHS placements.

Seminar aim

The aim of this seminar is to facilitate a series of debates on the outcomes of our investigations and about how, as a community of
academics, we can take forward current thinking. We are aware that there are many similar projects being undertaken in the UK at the
moment and would welcome colleagues who are also researching in this area to contribute to the discussions.

Intended outcomes

  • Discuss issues related to fitness to practice and impairment for the preparation of health and social care students.
  • Share the outcomes of our work to date and others who wish to contribute their own project outcomes.
  • Make recommendations for changes to practice in both academic and healthcare professional practice.
  • Explore possibilities for further collaborative work.

We have funding for 30 places, these are free and will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. If demand exceeds this we will use Illuminate to enable wider participation.
