Using Clinical Simulation and Audience Response Systems to Enhance Student Engagement and Critical Reasoning Skills

Effective educational practices depend on learning as a process of dialogue between tutor and learner. Some traditional methods can fail to facilitate dialogue since learners may be unable or unwilling to engage.

The use of Audience Response Systems, where all learners can respond to questions set by a tutor with the aggregated results displayed to the class, can alleviate barriers to dialogue. The Centre has experience of combining ARS with video streaming of high-fidelity simulated clinical scenarios, thus allowing learners to vote for a course of action: their actions determine the clinical outcome for the patient. This interaction has shown to develop active learning, formative feedback, critical reasoning and deep learning.

Aims of workshop

The proposed workshop will introduce delegates to the principles of combining ARS with video streaming of high fidelity simulated clinical scenarios. Delegates will have the opportunity to explore technical, practical and pedagogical aspects of utilising this form of e-learning.

Example activity included in workshop

Most staff already use Microsoft PowerPoint in their day-to-day teaching. One session will show how, after videoing and editing a short film, the video clips can be organised and embedded in PowerPoint, and when combined with an ARS called TurningPoint, serves to create an interactive class or forum for critical reflection

Proposed learning outcomes of workshop

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Develop knowledge and strategies for creating appropriate scenarios for use in this teaching environment.
  • Foster understanding of the principles of videoing high fidelity simulated clinical scenarios. Knowing where to position cameras and edit material into appropriate ‘decision points’; and
  • Develop a richer appreciation of formative assessment processes

Who would benefit most from this workshop?

Teaching staff, educationalists, learning technologists, multi-media staff, library/learning resource centre staff and clinical simulation centre staff
