It is proposed that this teaching methodology aids in three integral learning domains; they directly relate to the affective (“feeling”) domain and enable greater assimilation of cognitive (“thinking”) and the psychomotor (“skills”) domains.  Approaches presented are transferable and generalizable into delegates’ own educational contexts.

These creative, content-focused strategies aim to facilitate learning within a vibrant, engaging and richly sensory environment.

Aims of workshop

This explorative workshop will

  • Increase awareness of the benefits of activity within teaching practice for health professionals by active participation
  • Empower delegates with a ‘toolkit’ of transferable ideas for integration into their practice

Example activity included in workshop

A myriad of activities will be used; ranging from Short Sound Bite activities lasting 5-20minutes (e.g. ball games, card games, Hangman) and longer activities. The latter will include:

  • reflections on delegates’ own experience of innovative teaching approaches  shared in a World café over refreshments;
  • creating a best-fit journey between 2 destinations on a map of northern Europe based on ‘cue cards’ to illustrate the clinical process of planning client care.

Proposed learning outcomes of workshop

By the end of the workshop, participants will

  • have been involved by active participation in activities and appreciate underlying theory that demonstrate the benefits of these techniques
  • be encouraged to share ideas and inspire those unfamiliar with these approaches to join the adventure that keeps teaching an enjoyable experience for both students and lecturers.
  • be empowered with a ‘toolkit’ of transferable ideas for integration into their practice

Who would benefit most from this workshop?

Those involved in teaching or training students on professional courses with an interest in being more creative.
