First round of grants under the TechDis Assistive Technology (HEAT scheme) have been awarded for Autumn Term 2006

Four projects from the Health Sciences and Practice Subjects have been granted funds under the TechDis Heat Scheme for purchase of small assistive technology in autumn 2006 to enhance the learning experience of all students and to bring benefits to students with particular access needs.

  • Sallyanne Cassella’s team in Complementary Medicine, Faculty of Education, Health and Sciences, University of Derby will receive funds to purchase “Talking Tactile Tablet’ touch-sensitive screen technology to enhance the learning experience of a diversity of learners with varying individual needs as a component of a blended learning approach in anatomy and physiology.
  • Karen Gresty and Andrew Evenden in the School of Biological Sciences, University of Plymouth are granted funds for Portable Digital Recorders to enhance learning experience among students travelling long distances daily between clinical placements and theory classes.
  • Michael Hellawell and Jane Priestley from the Division of Rehabilitation, University of Bradford are funded for the purchase of a MiniDV Camcorder to create a more student-centred approach to capturing personal experience of practice placements, allowing evaluation of the practice placement preparation for undergraduate study.
  • Andy Pulman’s Learning & Teaching Web Team at the Institute of Health & Community Studies (IHCS), Bournemouth University have received funds to use the Nintendo DS and Brain Training package as a study support tool to assist students requiring help with numeracy skills.
