Julie is currently Academic Group Lead (Education) for the Organisation and Delivery of Care group, in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton.

In her role as Learning and Teaching Consultant Julie facilitates the Foundation Degrees Special Interest Group with colleagues Mary Northrop and Clare Thurgate.

Learning and Teaching Experience:

Julie is an Occupational therapist by background with a longstanding interest in mental health practice and workforce development. Since taking up her first joint appointment in 1996, her interest in Higher Education remains the interface between work and education. As part of the Health Care Innovation Unit, Julie led the development of a highly successful foundation degree which led to a Vice Chancellor’s Learning and Teaching Award for widening access in 2008. More importantly new progression routes into a range of health and social work degree programmes were created at Southampton and beyond, with many graduates going on to careers they had considered to be out of reach.  As Chair of the local Lifelong Learning Network in Health and Social Care between 2006 – 2010, Julie worked with employers and education providers to research and innovate vocational pathways into and through HE. This work continues to generate events and networks locally and regionally through neighbouring LLNs and South Central SHA.

Teaching Interests:

Her teaching interests include organising and leading in care, decision making for advanced practice, research methods and ethics education.

Research Interests:

Current research includes the development of Advanced Apprenticeships in health, student engagement in HE and Foundation degree students’ educational trajectories. Most recently Julie has worked with colleagues across twenty eight HEIs to establish a network committed to Researching, Advancing and Inspiring Student Engagement (RAISE) which will hold its inaugural conference in 2011.
